Soul Motion: Unity Inquiry
What happens in the dance room is a microcosm of what happens in the everyday dance. Soul Motion dancers practice seeing themselves and others as one essence knowing that all people desire happiness; all people wish to alleviate suffering. With consciousness of our unity as a strategy for more purposeful living, we look for those excluded from the dance and weave them in through landscapes of creative expression, relationship, and dialogue with divine nature.

Become still and shape space.

Become shape and shift silence.

Become silent and still shape.

From early days of dance training the message presented regarding dance spoke of shapes moving in space from a centered still point, which would anchor the integrity of the dancer to move in ways of unencumbered expression. I soon learned the value of the internal amorphous adventure of weight exchange and level exploration as well as the exhilaration of cutting through a room of flexible corridors, with quicksilver precision.

Shape shifting is a strategy used for the everyday dance of creative relational currents. These currents stream throughout individual encounters and provide buoyancy that is required to stay afloat in times of confusion and stress. The sound accompanying the everyday dance is a silent song. Laudable notes lie in our capacity to listen dearly and deeply to the silent space in- between the notes. We attend to this formless space as we recognize the value of allowance and we grow in our awareness to the ways we impatiently push for resolution. To wait in the gap and trust the synthesis of polarized points is to step into the dance of the master.

The dance of the master is a series of steps that opens perception to view what is happening accurately and to respond appropriately. Remain comfortable listening to a full range of individual voices and gain entry to the master’s dance. We miss the orchestral weaving of the community if the only sound we hear is the one emanating from our own chair. A Soul Motion dancer is committed to curiosity and reshaping the future through attention to the movement moment.

Remain cautious about becoming intoxicated by the clatter and ferocity of the chattering chaotic. Practice how to draw back, to step to the right, and wait for a fuller expression of situational sounds. Listen for the ways in which the song being sung can mend and notice how it operates to accompany the everyday dance of presence. Anchor your steps to solid ground while the heart in flux greets the oncoming wave of the everyday dance.

The everyday dance is symbolic of experiences being invented in the moment and moving to rhythms of unforeseen relations and to sounds of creative friction.

Hurriedly walking behind a too slow mother and stroller baby while tracking responses is to remain alert to the cacophony of the everyday dance. At our disposal is a point of choice, to surrender to the pace, to get heated and twitchy, to become outraged and lose equilibrium. Notice if a slow burn is rising in speaking to a person as either a fellow traveler or a nuisance as he cuts us off in a check out line, oblivious to our presence. The internal melody of the silent song, forever humming outwardly, is ultimately what determines the choice of steps in our everyday dance. What is the sound of the current you daily nurture?

Situated in the back body of all experience we move in is a silent current which manifests as a conscious vibration, a hum, which calls us to attention. Listen for it before striking out into the manifest world of action. Let this become an everyday dance practice of stepping to the right and the rear to survey, at a distance, the action unfolding. An unending stream of moment- to- moment awareness preoccupies the master’s dance of the everyday.

We are situated in a field of exposure to thought and taut nerves that will second- guess our resolve to action. These exposures can send us scurrying for explanations of purpose or to a vanishing point where ego and spirit meet in communion.

Freedom to take missteps, to fall and recover, to bruise and batter the psyche is a right of perpetual passage of the wandering dance artist.

Each step taken, each weight bearing shift, each shape and gesture of the everyday dance is an opening to a vista view of value. The enduring existence of every step is a path to the appreciation of immortality as all time stops. Just this!

There is no yearning past. There is no covetous future. Step inward to know the external. Step down to reach upward, step back to push forward, as a perpetual expansion of this movement moment.
