Soul Motion: Unity Inquiry
What happens in the dance room is a microcosm of what happens in the everyday dance. Soul Motion dancers practice seeing themselves and others as one essence knowing that all people desire happiness; all people wish to alleviate suffering. With consciousness of our unity as a strategy for more purposeful living, we look for those excluded from the dance and weave them in through landscapes of creative expression, relationship, and dialogue with divine nature.

Wrote a student from a recent SoulMotion experience at Esalen..."What began simply as a personal treat...a means to integrate became in the safe arms of your teaching, a sacramental honeymoon marking my marriage to myself and life on the infinite journey..."

A telling appraisal of what intentional movement and expressive creativity can uncover. This infinite journey to yourself is the ground in which a SoulMotion Odyssey is rooted. This knowing of self is paradoxical because by being in relations with one another and listening and asking questions we can solidify our own identity and more clearly understand our purpose and passion to move and live and have our being.

In our practice we use the Echo Dance to achieve such an opening to identity. We scan the room with soft receptive eyes catching and noticing the movements, gestures, shapes, and force of another. We open ourselves to a response. We allow the Body Intelligence to speak from the place of recognition or surprise. Yes, this is familiar and feels comfortable and my body is relaxing in the knowingness of shape. Or, this movement is sparking a desire to understand that which is unknown. Either way, the journey of mindfully moving in space and co-creating the next movement moment can supply a platform in which we launch into the mystery and magic of creating in the moment.

Each of us is here to sing a song and shout our aliveness and while that song is unique to our circumstance it also carries a few bars of ensemble familiarity. We indeed recognize one another's song regardless of how little we have heard it before. Embedded in our deepest body memory is a species song which comes with the territory of being embodied in form. We are playing in a universal orchestra and our personal instrumentation is felt and known and acknowledged by one and all.

This recognition is cell and muscle and bone and blood. This realization is carried by the shape in shared space. This renewal is a call to embrace our unity and dance our shared lives as co-creative choreographers on the stage of this moment to moment OneDance.
