My earliest memories of being fully engaged and present with my surroundings has me in a stroller, being pushed by my mother, while she walked with a friend down Willis Avenue in the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx.
My mother’s push travelled to the aluminum handle, then slid vertically down to the seat I was sitting on.
I could feel her being transmitted through the materials into my body. It was a tuning that I experienced. The slightest shift of force or turn of angle felt dense and weighted in my belly. I was learning that I live in an environment that has unseen forces that can move things and that can communicate things to me.
That moment was electrified in my awareness, and I experienced a distinct tunnel vision of what was going on, undeterred and unobstructed. My body went into a state of relaxation and I experienced a joy in my body that was highlighted by soft stomach muscles and a spacious feel as to where my body drew its boundaries. I was totally relaxed in that dance between my mother’s push and my receiving that push.
My curiosity was hooked from that moment by this unseen world of communication.
I became spell bound by its implications as I grew older and began what is a life-long adventure through curiosity of space, time, force, energy, and motion.
I soon realized that there were many benefits available to me as I focused attention on an unequivocal acceptance of the present moment. I moved into a broader view of acceptance and compassion.
My gratitude quotient deepens to levels not experienced before as I move graciously between events, conditions, and experiences, knowing that no feeling or thought is final.
I become more at ease with myself in the world as I relax in the dance that is taking place.
