“Live your mystery, not your history.” ~Vinn Arjuna Martí
Vinn Arjuna Martí, award-winning choreographer, global performer, master teacher and founder/artistic director of Soul Motion® a Conscious Dance Practice, is a man who found his life’s calling at a young age, and, in the process of following his path, has evolved a transformative movement practice that has touched the lives of thousands.
Bronx born, Vinn Arjuna started life off as an altar boy, saw service in Vietnam, and after release in 1974 made his way West to settle in Portland, Oregon. There, taking advantage of the GI bill, he enrolled in a local community college in pursuit of a degree in early childhood education.
All of this changed one afternoon in 1978, when Vinn Arjuna, needing to fill a physical education credit to receive his check from the VA, somewhat ambivalently walked into the doors of a jazz dance class – the only physical education class available at that time slot. Thirty minutes into the course, Vinn Arjuna lit up with a deep knowing and recognition that this was something he wanted to do. Vinn Arjuna KNEW he wanted to dance.
Suddenly everything changed. He had found his calling. And, in true Bronx boy spirit, he went to work answering it. Every day for the next fifteen years Vinn Arjuna lived, breathed and studied dance. He practiced and taught jazz, dance aerobics, modern dance, dance improvisation, choreography and nearly everything else in between.
Along the way, many wonderful teachers appeared on his path, mentoring Vinn Arjuna and inviting him to their studios to study and to train. Some of these world-class dance teachers included Barbara Dilley, Terry Sendgraff, Deborah Hay, Wilber Alix, Douglas Dunn, Eric Hawkins, Jose Brown, and Gabrielle Roth. Each of these teachers contributed their unique insights and perspectives, shaping Vinn Arjuna’s views on movement language, interior worlds of inspiration, and the power of truth in motion.
Since 2010 I have had as my teacher, Shambhavi Sarasvati. Her teachings derive from her studies in Kashmir Shaivism, Dzogchen, and her loving and direct relation with her Sat Guru Anandamayi Ma.
It has been and continues to be a rewarding and challenging teacher/student relationship as I grapple with the constrictions and tensions of accompanying teacher and cultivating relaxation in my daily life.
This teacher/student relationship has opened me up and relaxed me in ways that I know have impacted my teaching of Soul Motion®, my relations with loved ones, and interactions with students.
I am grateful to be in her life, even as I kick and scream my way toward her and her teachings.
