Frequently Asked Questions
“Now is the time to know that all you do is sacred.” ~Hafiz
What can I expect my first time in a class?
Soul Motion® classes are 60–120 minutes in length, held in a variety of dance spaces and can range in size between 10 to 80 dancers depending on the class location. You will be asked to dance barefoot and to wear comfortable clothing you can freely move and exercise in. Please be mindful of wearing scents and jewelry in the dance space.
Do I have to be a dancer or be fit to join a Soul Motion® class?
Not at all! Whether you are a dancer or not, an avid athlete, or only just beginning to move your body, Soul Motion® is for you. Everyone, regardless of experience or ability, is welcomed in a Soul Motion® class. All you have to do is show up with a willingness to learn and to participate.
(Note: Please do let your teacher know at the start of the class if you have physical concerns or needs so that they can best support you.)
Is Soul Motion® a free-form dance? Is there choreography/routines?
In each Soul Motion® class, you will be invited to participate in specific movement inquiries. Within those inquiries you will be encouraged to freely shape your dance, explore your body in motion, rest into stillness, and spontaneously express yourself in movement, allowing for abundant creativity and freedom of self-expression.
Do I have to dance with others or can I dance by myself?
The only “have-to” in a Soul Motion® class is a willingness to show up. Throughout any given class, you will have many opportunities to be inspired by and to engage with others without necessarily being in direct contact with each other.
Is Soul Motion® like 5Rhythms? Is it Ecstatic Dance?
No, Soul Motion® is a conscious dance practice with its own body of work and a distinct methodology and philosophy that informs both the movement inquiries and the structure of each class. And yes, Soul Motion® is and will continue to be influenced by other conscious and ecstatic practices, exercises, and traditions.
What can I gain from a Soul Motion® class?
Everybody’s experience in a Soul Motion® class is unique. Some come to Soul Motion® for a chance to stretch and tone their bodies and receive a workout. Others come to cultivate relaxation, relieve stress, and leave the worries of the world behind. Many come for the spiritual and transformative field of conscious dance inquiry. Others come for the sense of community that is created on a Soul Motion® dance floor.
What kind of music will I hear in a Soul Motion® class?
In a Soul Motion® class, you can expect to take a ride through many musical lands, styles, and eras. In any class you may hear Classical, East Indian, New Age, Techno, Strings, Popular Music, Old Standards, Lounge Music, Jazz Standards and the Great Sound of Silence. (At this point you may not hear much Country/Western; we are working on it.)
